Catherine Mermet
Tea; Guillot, 1869

Date Planted: June 2001
Souce: Plant trade
Exposure: Full sun

'Catherine Mermet' hasn't been the fastest rose to get established, taking 2 years in the ground from rooted twiglet to begin gonzo growing. But once she'd quietly built up a root system, she took off! A chunky (rather than lanky) grower and constantly blooming. And I do mean constantly - this rose has not been without blooms once all summer!

And oh... the flowers! They're enough to make poets weep. Scrolled buds spiral open into medium sized flowers in shades of cream touched with peachy-pink, with a fragrance to match. Sturdier of wood than many teas and less prone to nodding, this mid-century hybrid foreshadowed the floral form of the Hybrid Teas and would blend well with some of the earlier, more lightly built members of the class. It's a terrific cut flower. The foliage has remained very healthy without spraying, too. Reputed to reach 4' to 7' tall. A truly outstanding rose that is worth waiting for.
