Desprez à Fleur Jaune (Jaune Desprez)

Exposure: Full sun

There is something special about 'Desprez a Fleur Jaune' ("Jaune Desprez" for short.) Though certainly not the rose for anyone who requires big, glamorous flowers, "Jaune Desprez" is a variety of exceptional charm. It is one of the first roses to bloom in spring, with flowers opening from tiny, perfectly scrolled and pointed buds. The open flowers are loosely quartered rosettes with distinct button eyes, no more than 2.5 or 3 in. across. Their color is a soft buff-apricot, shot through with yellow and pink. They are born in large clusters, filling the air around the plant with a potent and exotic tropical fruit and musk perfume. "Jaune Desprez" blooms almost continually until the first heavy frost, its color varying as the season progresses. (The flowers are generally paler and creamier in cool weather, deeper toned and pink-ish in the heat of summer.)

"Jaune Desprez" is a large climber, reported to reach up to 20 ft. Basal branches will easily reach 10 or 12 ft. in a single season, and laterals will continue to grow nearly as long. Unlike many modern climbers, "Jaune Desprez" can develop many large base branches each season, leaving the gardener's hands full training and tying them in. Foliage on this variety is small, long-pointed and slightly drooping, giving the plant an overall air of grace. When trained on a wall this rose may show some powdery mildew on new growth, but this seems to be the only health problem.
