Known as Cluster-Flowered roses outside of the
USA, the roses known as Floribundas evolved from crosses between Polyanthas and Hybrid Teas. The polyantha genes contributed an overall
shrubbier groth form and cluster-blooming characteristics, while the Hybrid Teas contributed flower form, color and fragrance. Overall, floribundas can be quite satisfactory garden
plants, with an informal character that lends itself well to landscaping applications. I find them to be quite "user friendly" overall.
I have also lumped the ARS class Grandiflora into this category, since they are also considered Cluster-Flowering roses by most of the rest of the world.
Grandiflora roses are basically Floribundas with larger flowers and generally taller growth; 'Queen Elizabeth' is the sole example of this class that I currently grow.
The pages that follow contain images of these roses and detail their performance in my garden. Return to Modern Roses |
