Date Planted:  rooted cutting in gallon pot

Exposure: Full sun

I must confess: I've always hated this rose. Loathed it. Thought it was incredibly ugly. Wouldn't grow it on a bet, in fact.

Until I saw it in person.

"That's Fragrant Cloud? I thought it was dirty-mud-orange colored; it is in all the photos!"

And then I smelled it.

OK, I admit it - I was wrong. Totally unfair, in fact. There's a reason why Fragrant Cloud has been a favorite since 1963 - because it is a stellar rose.

The color is much, much prettier in life - it just doesn't photograph well. The scent is the stuff that perfumiers dream of. And the plant itself? It's not even ugly and disease-ridden... it's a decent looking plant and can manage without spraying. All that and it's hardy to Zone 4, too.

It's the Raquel Welch of roses - been around forever and still turning heads and breaking hearts. It's just not fair. But you know what?

Sometimes it's nice to be wrong.
