Matangi
Floribunda; MacGredy, 1974

Date Planted: Potted, 2002
Source: Mail Order

'Matangi' is a Floribunda of real distinction and character, although a bit of a curiosity. One of Sam McGredy's 'Hand-painted Roses, its coloring is changeable - basic vermillion softened and brightened by the palest pink with which the petals are so liberally brushed. The flowers are very nicely shaped and borne in abundance. The foliage is small, dark green and very healthy, on a strong plant that grows to a manageable 3 feet in height. The only fault is a lack of pronounced fragrance.

Because the color intensity and painted effect are directly influenced by light exposure, I strongly recommend growing this rose in a pot so you can experiment with different locations before planting it in the ground.
