Nigrette (The Black Rose of Sangerhausen)
Hybrid Tea; Max Krause, 1934

Date Planted: Summer 2001
and Spring 2003 (2 plants)
Source: Mail Order

Also known as 'The Black Rose of Sangerhausen', 'Nigrette' is about as close to black as a rose can get. A Hybrid Tea by breeding, 'Nigrette' grows to only 2.5 to 3 feet tall, so it's ideal for the front of the border or in containers. The 2" blooms are borne in profusion and are fragrant, although not notably so. The disease resistance is acceptable - it does get blackspot in my no-spray Darwinian war zone, er, garden and would probably perform better with routine chemical intervention.

'Nigrette' was introduced in 1934 and is not commonly found in commerce, despite the fabulous color - quite frankly, I feel this rose would be much more widely grown if it had a different name.
