Penelope Hybrid Musk ('Ophelia' x 'Trier') Pemberton, 1924
Date Planted: March 2003 Source: Trade Exposure: Full sun all day
This charming rose is not admired for the beauty of it's individual flowers, but rather for
it's overall display of semi-double, 2.5 inch, pink fading to white flowers with slightly ruffled petals and prominent yellow stamens. The blooms are strongly fragrant, with a musk perfume that carries
some distance from the plant. To my nose, the fragrance is 'Old Rose meets Fresh Sweat' - it's an earthy-sweet aroma, and not at all unpleasant.
The plant is a delight to grow - healthy, vigorous and very versatile. It can easily be grown as a somewhat hefty 5' x 5' shrub or as a small climber. It will also tolerate more shade
than many other roses, growing and blooming well, but it may require more protection against foliar disease when grown in such less-than-optimal conditions. Penelope's a real winner. To see more photos, visit the Photo Gallery!
