Not all roses perform the same; one person's favorite rose is another's dud.  Climate, quality of care, disease resistance, where it is planted, soil PH and composition, fertilizing, spraying... all these and more will effect how well a rose performs for you.

The listed roses are the ones that either died (and weren't replaced) or that I simply got rid of. Some were good roses that I gave away to free up the real estate... and some royally sucked.

The roses I created pages for are linked if you'd like more information about them.

  • America - disease magnet
  • Dolly Parton - disease magnet, ugly plant, few blooms
  • Fortune Teller - disease magnet, ugly plant, few blooms
  • Pink Grootendorst - UGLY!!!  Looks like a Chernobyl carnation.
  • Climbing Peace - mosaic virus, constantly defoliated from blackspot
  • Royal Highness - ugly plant, few blooms, blackspot
  • Topaz Jewel - good rose, but I didn't like it enough to keep it.
  • Seattle Scentsation - it croaked.
  • Si - Absolutely adorable, but it died. I'll probably replace it some day.
  • Loving Memory - pretty rose, nice plant, gave it to the neighbor.
  • Winchester Cathedral - DIED 2001 - RMV infected, runty, never amounted to anything. Good variety, but a bad, bad plant.
  • Tradescant - I gave this one away to a chemical-friendly friend. Beautiful blooms on an ungainly plant that looked like a leper in my no-spray garden.
  • LD Braithwaite - NOT L.D. Braithwaite - possibly Othello. Bad plant - a 'poor dooer', disease-ridden mongrel of a rose. Blech!
  • Evelyn - Beautiful rose that I gave away to make room for an OGR.
  • Eglantyne - Beautiful rose that I gave away to make room for an OGR.
  • Gizmo - Nice shrubby plant, healthy too, but I couldn't love it. I gave it away to make room for an OGR.
  • Irresistable - it CROAKED.
  • Ivory Palance - It croaked too.
  • Overnight Scentsation - can you guess??
  • Pacesetter - 0 for 4 on the minis here.
  • Baby Grand - this is getting embarassing.
  • Purple Heart - no, it didn't die! This is actually a very nice rose. Healthy, fragrant, blooms well... but to me it lacked that 'certain something' (I didn't love it) so I gave it away.
  • Moonsprite - but this one did.
  • Lady of the Dawn - Evicted
  • Brass Band - Great rose in many respects - healthy, nice looking plant, blooms well... but no fragrance and just too modern looking to fit in with my other roses. I gave it to a good friend.
  • Guy de Maupassant - Blech - I gave it away to someone who sprays.
  • Abbaye de Cluny - Gorgeous rose in every respect! However, it was being eaten alive by Mutabilis so it moved across the street. I've retained cutting rights.
  • Auguste Renoire - Nice rose, but I wanted the real estate for an OGR. It moved across the street.
  • Summer's Kiss - Gorgeous fragrant blooms on an ugly plant that needed spraying... in other words, a typical modern HT. It went to live with a friend that would enable it's fungicide addiction.
  • Barbra Streisand - IT SUCKED!!!  The only rose I've actually hated. I loathed it. Pretty tough plant though - I tried for 2 years to ignore it to dealth and the damned thing refused to die!  I gave it to a friend who would actually feed and water it, and was willing to enable it's fungicide addiction. Good riddance!
  • Gift of Life - This is a really good rose! Healthy, nice looking as Hybrid Teas go, fragrant, nice color... but I gave it to a friend to make room - Pat Austin was eating it.
  • Gemini - Not a 'sucker', but I just couldn't love this rose. Typical homely HT growth, no fragrance and it's patented too, so I gave it away to make room for an OGR.
  • Candystripe - it sucked.
  • Moon River - nice rose, but I wanted it's spot.
  • Rockin' Robin - garish. hated the name - gave it away.
  • Royal Bonica - gave it away
  • Queen Margrethe - great rose, but I wanted it's spot. It moved to a good home.
  • Mystic Meidilland - nothing special.
  • Joyce Barden - it died. I may have cried over this one.
  • Eugene de Beauharnais - it never did much and finally died
  • First Light - fabulous rose, but I wanted an OGR in that spot. It moved across the street.
  • Doctor Huey - do I need to explain this one?
