Souvenir d'Elise Vardon
(Souv. d'Elisa Vardon)
Tea; Marest, 1845

Planted: 2001
Source: trade

This is without a doubt, bar none, my favorite Tea rose. The plant itself is much shrubbier and denser than many of the other Teas I grow and has a nice rounded shape. The new canes and foliage are an intense maroon red that is quite decorative, and the foliage is blemish-free, with the exception of some spotting on older foliage that is about to drop. Average thorniness. Bare legs are not a problem - it's clothed in elegant, dark green foliage clear to the ground. It's shown no sign of wanting to get taller than about 3 feet, making it an awesome candidate for the prized spot at the front of the border.

And the blooms? Simply... wow! They are spectacularly romantic looking - full of petals in an incredible medly of peaches & cream with some raspberry and lemon thrown in for good measure. The fragrance is sweet and clean, although not overpowering. I really can't understand why this rose is so rare in commerce!
