Tradescant (AUSdir) 'Prospero' x ('Charles Austin' x 'Gloire de Ducher') David Austin, 1993Date Planted: April 11, 1998 Source: J & P, local nursery Exposure: Full sun all day
The deepest red English rose, 'Tradescant' is promoted as the ideal border rose, with rare, wine-crimson color that fits in spaces too small for most roses. Don't believe everything you read
on a rose tag! Not particularly vigorous, I think this rose would do better in less crowded quarters. I'm considering moving it and The Prince to a new bed, where they
have less comptetion from neighboring perennials. The blossoms, with their dense, quilled inner petals and powerful old-rose fragrance are
similar in color, fragrance and size to The Prince, with a different flower form and growth pattern. Tradescant tends to bloom in sprays at the end of long canes - pegging will
help encourage lateral growth and more blooms. This awkward growth habit makes it a bit awkward to incorporate gracefully into a mixed border.
Disease resistance is marginal, at best - this one gets a lot of blackspot, and is therefore a condidate for shovel-pruning.
I gave this one away to a chemical-friendly friend. Beautiful blooms on an ungainly plant that looked like a leper in my no-spray garden.
